An excellent salad variety, suitable for canning in slices, making delicious sliced vegetables.
An ancient, mid-season, and very vigorous variety, producing pink-purple fruits up to 10 cm in diameter and weighing 1.3 kg. They contain few seeds and are practically cored. The flesh is very firm.
Growth type: indeterminate.
Historical origin: USA, Virginia. Year of registration: 1889.
Some believe it is a descendant of the "Ponderosa" variety, which won the Grand Prix for quality at the Jamestown exhibition in 1907.
